Guerino Jean Bruce at the ESL/ENL Department strives to provide all English language learners at YCD with the instruction and support they need to achieve proficiency in Standard American English, whether they are newcomer beginners or advanced native English speakers with below-grade-level literacy, and everyone in between.

There is a special focus on academic vocabulary and topics that are culturally relevant and interesting to students. Multimedia and online tools such as Max Scholar, Flocabulary, and Newsela increase student engagement and make learning come alive as students work on reading comprehension, discussion skills, critical thinking, and cohesive essay writing.

English language learners face the incredible challenge of catching up to their peers' language proficiency level in a very short time if they are to pass their classes, Regents exams, and be college and career ready. We are here to guide them and support them in their pursuit of academic success.
